Mariam was watching the carnage like a teenager playing a video game. Whoever she had been before the injection, she was someone else now—a person who didn’t feel the suffering of others, and who was therefore not a person at all.

Nate met Anahita’s gaze. He nodded to her, and then he pulled himself toward Mariam, followed by Susana.

Anahita told the computer the Saadi poem, concluding it with her birthday and Chen’s birthday—backwards. This was their password.

“Thank you,” the computer wrote. “It is highly unlikely that it will be broken for some time.”

“No, thank you, computer.” Chen looked at Anahita. “Ready?”

She nodded. “Computer, in a moment you’re going to transfer total control of the ship to this console. Immediately after that, use the password to lock out everyone else.”

“Standing by to execute your command,” the computer said.

Anahita looked at Chen, and then at Nate and Susana, who had moved to either side of Mariam, and were now pretending to watch her efforts to exterminate the last of the human race. They kept glancing at Anahita, however. Both were armed.

She leaned her head back, prayed inwardly for God to help them, and released a fake sneeze.
